Substation Series – Part 9 of 11:

Engineering Camouflage Into the Design

May 7, 2021

The most effective engineering solutions often address multiple challenges at once.

During the development of ArcAngel®, Copperweld explored whether conductor finishes could improve visual integration within substations while preserving the electrical and mechanical performance expected of Copper-Clad Steel grounding conductors.

Engineers evaluated a permanent tin-plated finish that naturally blends with galvanized structures and equipment commonly found throughout substations. Laboratory testing confirmed that the finish had no measurable effect on short-circuit performance while maintaining the conductor's long-term corrosion resistance and durability. The result was a grounding conductor that not only performs exceptionally under fault conditions but also complements the visual environment in which it is installed.

This phase of development demonstrates how thoughtful engineering extends beyond electrical performance alone. By considering practical field conditions alongside laboratory performance, Copperweld continued refining ArcAngel into a grounding solution engineered for the realities of modern utility infrastructure.

With the conductor design largely complete, the next question became one of project value. Could stronger conductor design eliminate the need to upsize simply to gain additional mechanical strength?
